City Council votes to redistrict 49th Ward

The shaded area represents the new boundaries for the 49th Ward to take effect in 2015. The area outlined in red represents the old or current boundaries.

The Chicago City Council adopted new boundaries for the city’s wards on Thursday, a daunting task required every 10 years.

For Rogers park, the remap cut out all of the ward’s Edgewater territory south of W. Devon Avenue and  picked up a significant chunk of Rogers Park that has been a part of the 40th Ward for the past 20 years.

It’s important to note that the map won’t technically take effect until 2015, in the next aldermanic elections. Although Ward 49 alderman Joe Moore indicated that those living in the to-be annexed sections of neighboring wards are able to contact his office for any city service needs.

The new map passed in the council with a 41-8 vote. The following Aldermen voted against the new map:  Fioretti (2nd), Sawyer (6th), Zalewski (23rd), Chandler (24th), Waguespack (32nd), Colon (35th), Sposato (36th), Arena (45th). Ald. Toni Foulkes (15th) was absent.
